Pine-ing for payments: The best podcasts to learn more about payments
Bonus Issue | 26 December 2023
As we celebrate the holiday season and approach the end of another year, I wanted to share something a little different than the previous posts.
When I started this Substack a few months ago, I was focused on explaining payments concepts in an easy-to-understand manner. The genesis of this idea came about as I searched for various online resources to understand how money moved from one place to the other in our digital era. It has certainly been a journey, as I learn more about digital payments, hone in on my writing skills and hopefully engage with more readers in the new year.
On that note, I wanted to thank my current readers who have been there as I embarked on this writing experiment. I really appreciate the encouragement, support and feedback (of course!).
Second, I wanted to share some great podcasts I came across when I first started learning about digital payments. These podcasts have made payment concepts accessible to me, so I wanted to curate a list in case you’re looking for some great audio material (in addition to this newsletter of course 😉).

Best payments podcasts:
🔥 Payments On Fire: A podcast from Glenbrook Partners that covers various payments topics as well as developments in fintech. One of my favorite episodes from this podcast explains the concept of network tokenization and how it works. The podcast can be found on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or Google Podcasts.
Note: If you prefer reading about tokenization in written form, check out this post.
🏦 Breaking Banks: An amazing podcast that covers various topics in fintech and payment innovation. Hosted by Brett King (author of Bank 4.0), Jason Hendrich and JP Nichols (founders of Alloy Labs) and a plethora of panelists, the podcast discusses payments and digital banking topics from around the world.
⬇️ Fintech Insider: This podcast by 11:FS peels back the layers on payments, financial services, technology and fintech with a panel of industry experts. The podcast covers the latest news, trends and innovations, but truly the best part is the insights from the panelists.
💵 The Payments Podcast: Switching gears, this podcast brought to you by Bottomline Technologies focuses on the payments world with a spotlight on how businesses make payments and get paid. The podcast does a really great job of simplifying payments concepts and the implications of future changes in payments landscape. One of my favorite episodes from this podcast focuses on ISO 20022 (an international standard for financial messages that accompany payments), a typically dry topic which is made interesting by the knowledgeable discussion between the host and guest.
👁️🗨️ The Treasury Update Podcast: Another great podcast that focuses on business payments, specifically from a treasury angle. This podcast by Strategic Treasurer gets deep into the intricacies of treasury and how businesses manage their financial resources through payments. Although one doesn’t normally associate innovation with treasury, this podcast does a really good job of highlighting the trends and technology developments in the business payments space in an approachable manner.
Hope you enjoy these podcasts as much as I have. Wishing you all a wonderful holiday season, and I can’t wait to share more posts in the new year.
